This position participates in the performance of nuclear criticality safety evaluations.
Expected to have expert level knowledge on the use and meaning of all of the national standards.
Will be engaged in the development of criticality safety technical proposals, project cost/schedule documentation, and provides technical leadership to resolve issues, including conferring with project officials to resolve situations where hazards are beyond acceptable levels.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Works with operating organization personnel and senior criticality safety engineers to reach consensus agreement as to the normal and credible abnormal process conditions.
Ensures nuclear criticality safety results, materials, processes and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
Assists in the reviews of new or proposed changes to existing significant quantity fissile/fissionable material operating procedures and assists in making recommended changes or additions to guidelines and limits to mitigate the consequences of inadvertent nuclear criticality.
Potential for interface with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Transportation (DOT), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) for criticality safety issues and matters.
Qualifications / Requirements:
Completion of a BS, MS, or PhD in nuclear engineering, nuclear physics or related discipline.
Typically a minimum of 4 years nuclear safety engineering experience required.
Experience in broad range of analytical methods used in developing safety analyses and risk assessments and knowledge of Department of Energy and/or Nuclear Regulatory Commission nuclear safety and unreviewed safety question guides and standards preferred.
Ability to develop criticality safety strategies, specifying criticality safety structures, systems, and components (SSC).
Ability to develop criticality safety evaluation (NCSE) and supporting criticality calculation in accordance with DOE standards and guidelines.
Knowledge of the use of the common computer codes for modeling and physical interpretation.
Demonstrated DOE and/or commercial nuclear experience performing criticality safety analytical and operation tasks in accordance with ANSI/ANS national standards.
Demonstrated experience with criticality safety analysis tools and experience with qualitative and quantitative accident analysis techniques.
